FAQ

Q.   IF I USE BUSY LIZZIES HOW MANY DO I PUT IN THE POTS?
A.   For the 51mm baskets - 1 small plant, for the 125mm baskets - 5 small plants, for the 200mm baskets - about 10 small plants. As they mature you can add or take away to suit your requirements.
Q.   DO I NEED TO USE SOIL?
A.   Pond soil is usually recommended, but we planted the busy lizzies direct from the plastic trays in which they were purchased.
Q.   WHAT OTHER PLANTS CAN I USE?
A.   Mimulus, Caltha, Veronica Houttuynia, Myosotis, basically marginal pond plants.
Q.   WILL WILDLIFE LIKE MY BASKET FLOATERS?
A.   Yes
Q.   WILL MY BASKET FLOATER SINK ?
A.   It should not sink, if it starts to sink this is a sign the plant has out grown the basket floater. Either trim or thin the plant or go for a bigger size floater.
Q.   WHY HAS MY FLOATER BLOWN OVER?
A.   Taller plants will be more suited to the larger floaters, but if you wish to keep the same floater then trimming the height will be necessary.
Q.   CAN I LEAVE MY BASKET FLOATER IN THE POND THROUGH THE WINTER?
A.   Yes. We have cut back the hardy plants (houttuynia) and this has been left in over winter and new growth has appeared in spring. Obviously busy lizzies have been completely removed but the floater left in the pond.
Q.   MY BASKET FLOATER MOVES AROUND THE POND. HOW CAN I SECURE IT IN ONE PART OF THE POND ?
A.   Tie a nylon cord to a polythene bag filled with pebbles or chipping and secure the nylon cord to the bottom of the plastic pot
Q.   I LIVE IN THE REPUBLIC OF IRELAND. DO YOU HAVE A CONTACT FOR YOUR BASKET FLOATERS?
A.   Yes please contact John Sweeney e-mail johnswee@eircom.net
Q.   BUSY LIZZIES IN THE 900-06 FLOATER LOOK REALLY GOOD AND I AM CONVINCED THAT MY BLANKET WEED PROBLEM IS DISAPPEARING IS THIS POSSIBLE ?
A.   Several customers have contacted us to say that with their floaters planted with busy lizzies they have very little blanket weed see if the same happens next year and then it will require expert analysis
Q.   I READ A LETTER IN SEPT 2003 WATER GARDENER MAGAZINE UNDER THE HEADING "DISAPPEARING ACT" REF FLOATING BASKETS AND THE DISAPPEARANCE OF BLANKET WEED. DOES THIS REFER TO YOUR PRODUCT?
A.   Yes, the person who wrote the letter is a customer and she has been delighted that her blanket weed has disappeared - busy lizzies are again a factor.
Q.   WELL GRAHAM WHAT ARE YOUR VIEWS ON THE OPINION OF THE EXPERTS TO THE QUESTION RE BLANKET WEED AND BUSY LIZZIES IN ESSENTIAL WATER GARDEN MARCH 2004 ISSUE?
A.   We put busy lizzies in our basket floaters to give us lots of colour through the summer. The idea being that we were always watering our hanging baskets, so maybe busy lizzies would grow well in the pond with the roots constantly in water. This proved very successful - the fact that the blanket weed problem virtually disappeared was an added bonus. We are not sure why.
Q.   HOW MANY BUSY LIZZIES DO I PUT IN MY 9ft x 9ft x 3ft (DEEP) APPROX . TO RESTRICT BLANKET WEED ?
A.   We really do not know the answer. We now only plant busy lizzies and we have a 900mm - 06 , a 900mm - 09 , a 450mm , two x 185mm , and two 325mm basket floaters in a pond approx 11ft x 5ft x 3.5ft deep .A lot of plants and really colourful flowers and little blanket weed
